Luton Airport has busiest ever year

A total of 14.5 million passengers travelled through London Luton Airport (LLA) last year, making 2016 the busiest year ever in the airport’s history The record figure represents annual growth of 18.5% compared to 2015. LLA has now seen thirty three months of consecutive passenger growth, with each percentage increase reaching double digits. December saw a 24.6% rise in passenger numbers compared with the same month in 2015. To meet the continued demand from passengers, the largest single investment in its 79 history is underway to transform the airport. Green light for £300m Luton complex praised by Park First

Park First has praised news of a £300 million development set to be built next to its Luton airport car parking site has been given the green light. The council has given the go-ahead for the former Vauxhall car plant site to be turned into a mixed-use development featuring apartments, a hotel, medical centre, park, retail and leisure complex – as well as Luton’s tallest building. The site is adjacent to Park First’s Luton car parking site, which serves London Luton Airport customers under the Swift Park brand. New international flights see Glasgow Airport passenger numbers soar

The introduction of new flights to France, Belgium and South Korea has seen passenger numbers at Glasgow Airport soar by 650,000 in the past year. A total of 9.4 million passengers passed through the airport on its 50th anniversary year, a rise credited to the 25 new routes brought on board during 2016. It is now predicting further growth with new flights to Munich, Bergen, Lisbon, Valencia, Palanga in Lithuania and Zadar in Croatia being introduced in the next 12 months. Norwegian prepares for continued growth at Edinburgh Airport

Low-cost airline Norwegian has announced it will be creating more than 130 crew and pilot jobs in Scotland as it prepares for continued growth at Edinburgh Airport in 2017. Norwegian began flying from Edinburgh in 2009 and has now flown over 1.1 million passengers with services to six European destinations. With a range of new aircraft being delivered in 2017, including the Boeing 737 MAX, Norwegian is planning further new routes from Edinburgh. Game of Thrones fans help Gatwick Airport hit record number of passengers in 2016

A record number of people travelled through London Gatwick in 2016, thanks in part to Game of Thrones fans flying to Northern Ireland to see the TV show’s set, the airport has claimed. Forty-three million passengers passed through Gatwick last year, up 3m from 2015. The Sussex airport enjoyed a record December that saw a 15pc increase in the number of passengers from the same month in 2015. Numbers were boosted by a 27pc growth in Gatwick’s long-haul services, while cargo metric tonnage rose 13pc.
