Gatwick Airport presses for expansion after topping a record 44m annual passengers

Gatwick Airport has recorded its best year on record, welcoming 44m passengers to the airport in a year for the first time. The London airport passed the milestone this weekend, making it a record for a single runway airport, and taking Gatwick to 49 consecutive months of growth. Gatwick’s boss Stewart Wingate has taken the opportunity to reiterate his push for airport expansion. Thirst for transatlantic flights pushes Gatwick to break passenger world record

A spike in long-haul passengers to North America has helped Gatwick Airport smash a world record for passenger at a single-runway airport. The airport passed the 44m passengers a year mark last Saturday driven by demand long-haul routes, particularly transatlantic ones. The number of passengers on such flights rose 47pc to 2.87m during the year to end of March as 20 new long-haul routes were launched from the airport. The West Sussex airport also 
enjoyed a surge in the amount of cargo it handled, with it rising 16pc to

15 million passengers travelled through London Luton Airport (LLA) in the last 12 months; a new milestone in LLA’s 79-year history. More than 1.2 million passengers flew through LLA In March – a 15.7% increase compared with the same period last year, marking three years of continuous growth at the airport. The airline and package holiday provider has just announced three brand new destinations exclusive to Glasgow Aiport – Bodrum, Kefalonia and Halkidiki for Summer 2018. Glasgow Airport passenger numbers rise 7.7 per cent but figures are down at Aberdeen

International numbers at Glasgow are up 20 per cent thanks to strong demand for new routes including Paris and Dusseldorf and Emirates’ Dubai service – although domestic traffic is down 1.4 per cent Glasgow Airport has reported strong February passenger growth – though figures were down again at Aberdeen. Glasgow Airport said passenger numbers rose 7.7 per cent on last year to 603,288, adjusting for the fact 2016 was a leap year. International numbers at Glasgow rose 20.3 per cent on the back of strong demand for new routes to Paris, Dusseldorf, Brussels, Barcelona and Bucharest and 6.6 per cent growth in long-haul, boosted by “strong demand” for Emirates’ Dubai service.
